Traditional Byzantine mosaic art, created using Venetian smalti and natural stones, is both beautiful and timeless. Mosaics remain virtually unchanged for centuries. Each little piece of precious glass or colored marble has to be fabricated by hand, which is why mosaic icons tend to be laborious and expensive. I have personally studied the methods of ancient mosaic art at La Scuola Del Mosaico in Ravenna, Italy. I currently make mosaics in collaboration with Micah Andrews— another student of the same mosaic school.
